MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers celebrated their seniors on Saturday, and while the visiting Huskies did steal a bit of the day's luster, Minot State enjoyed the efforts on the mat and the Senior Day honors.
Battling hard, the Beavers got a forfeit win from senior
Oscar Nellis and a decision victory each from
Cayden White and
Jake Swirple as Minot State put in a strong showing against fifth-ranked St. Cloud State in the team's NSIC dual, but fell 24-12 to the Huskies.
Part of a day honored the Beavers six seniors: Nellis,
Nathan Baca,
Austin Frantzich,
Joey Lopez,
Alex Sandoval, Jr., and
Dustin Swisher.
Nellis picked up a victory on senior day by forfeit in his 125-pound match. That turned out to be the final match of the dual and closed the scoring at 24-12.
His win capped a late charge by the Beavers (8-9 duals, 3-6 NSIC), who fell behind 21-0 on the scoreboard before White's 8-4 decision at 184 pounds began to close the gap.
Swisher they battled at 197 pounds, trying to add a win on senior day for Minot State, only to come up just short falling 6-4 to Dom Murphy.
Swirple then gutted out a 2-0 decision at heavyweight for the Beavers other victory on the day.
The Beavers other seniors, Baca and Frantzich, also battled hard on the mats looking for a win on Senior Day but Baca came up short 5-0 in his 157-pound match against Blake Legred, and Frantzich lost a 12-2 major decision at 165 pounds to Jimmy Pierandozzi.
Lopez and Sandoval did not wrestle on Saturday.
With the regular season done for the Beavers, Minot State now gets two weeks off to prepare for the NCAA Super Region V Tournament hosted by Northern State on Saturday, Feb. 25.
