WICHITA, Kan. – The Beavers came battling back with a determined effort at Newman on Friday afternoon.
After seeing an early edge slip away, the Minot State baseball team used a 7-run rally late to take control and win an 18-10 slugfest at Newman.
The two teams meet again Saturday for a doubleheader hosted by the Jets starting at noon.
Minot State (4-1 overall) got solo home runs from
Brent Riddle and
Derek Kay as the Beavers built a 6-0 lead, but the Jets chipped away and eventually grabbed an 8-7 edge in the bottom of the seventh.
Minot State answered with one big rally as Riddle's two-run single in the top of the eighth inning put the Beavers back in front and sparked a 7-run surge that saw
Gunnar Kozlowitz hit a 3-run homer, while
Shane Kary and Martin Rodriguez each added an RBI to put Minot State on top 14-8.
Mark Ossanna added a 3-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to help ice the Beavers' comeback victory.
Ossanna ended up leading the way offensively for Minot State going 4-for-6 with three RBIs, while Kary added a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with two RBIs.
Dominick Parkhurst (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Beavers, striking out two and allowing just one run in 2 2/3 innings.
