LYNCHBURG, Va. – The weekend in Virginia got off to a rough start for the top-ranked Minot State men's hockey team.
Host Liberty scored goals 51 seconds apart midway through the first period and rode that momentum the rest of the night to a 5-1 upset of the visiting Beavers late Friday night.
The two teams meet again Saturday in Virginia with puck-drop scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT).
The loss snaps an 11-game win for No. 1 Minot State (28-3-0 overall) in its head-to-head series against No. 6 Liberty, a streak that includes 4-2 and 2-1 victories by the Beavers at home in October of this season.
Off to a fast start, Liberty added three more goals in the second period and held the Beavers scoreless most of the evening.
Christian Kadolph broke up the shutout with 2:06 remaining, though, scoring a power-play goal for Minot State off assists from
Reece Henry and
Reid Arnold.
Jake Anthony finished with 23 saves in goal for the Beavers, who outshot the Flames 37-28 on the night.
