MINOT, ND – The University of Mary won the in-state battle with Minot State on Saturday, sweeping an NSIC doubleheader from the Beavers at Corbett Field, and putting a damper on "Senior Day."
Minot State honored the playing careers of seniors Bryant Bagshaw, Dominick Parkhurst, Austin Loeb, Tyler Wiltshire, Matt Malone, and Garrett Nicholson, but the Marauders ended up with the wins as Mary took the opener 14-7 and the nightcap 10-3.
Minot State (25-15 overall, 16-12 NSIC) in a single game on Sunday at Corbett Field at noon to wrap up the weekend.
GAME 1 | Mary 14, Minot State 7
MINOT, ND -- An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Minot State on Saturday. The Beavers scored seven runs, but could not hold the Mary Marauders at bay, and were defeated 14-7.
Junior Craig Schmich (4-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State.
Junior Mark Ossanna led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBI. Junior Javier Gutierrez compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Derek Kay also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Minot State with a double and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with runs in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Beavers then held the Marauders scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Kay that brought home senior Tyler Wiltshire and sophomore Dalin Ludlow, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Beavers.
Minot State's lead had disappeared by the time the sixth inning arrived and turned into a 13-4 Mary advantage, when the Beavers cut that deficit to 13-5. The Beavers picked up a run on Gutierrez's leadoff home run off junior Parker Wakelyn.
The Marauders expanded their lead to 14-5 before the Minot State offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. The Beavers scored twice on Ossanna's two-run homer, tightening the Mary lead to 14-7. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

MINOT, ND -- Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz put together a stellar showing at the plate Saturday, hitting two home runs, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the Mary Marauders 10-3.
Junior Trevyn Badger (2-2) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. The right-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
Kozlowitz went 3-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with three RBIs.

The Beavers were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Kozlowitz put Minot State on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior Halen Knoll.
