CHESTERFIELD, MO. – The Minot State women's hockey team kicked off their first appearance in day one of the WMCH Showcase. It was a grind, but the Beavers got the job done over the Maryville University Saints.
The No. 7 Beavers (12-10-0) defeated the 5
th-ranked Saints (15-13-0) by a final score of 2-1. Maryville's lone goal came at 9:50 left in the first period, but that was all they could muster as the Beavers stood out well defensively in a tight contest. Minot State responded to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission. The go-ahead goal was scored at 4:28 remaining in the middle frame. That second period tally would end up becoming the game-winning goal and all that the Beavers needed to secure the win.
Minot State picks up their second win over Maryville this season and sixth win overall versus the Saints since affiliation started with MSU Athletics. Both teams will not meet again for the rest of the regular season, but a possible re-match could take place either in the WMCH Tournament or ACHA National Tournament later on.
Gracie Perry broke through with 50 seconds left to go in the first to give the Beavers the tying marker. It was her third of the year with the assist coming from captain
Riley Ball. Scoring the game-winner was
Cameron Schmidt, who now has goals in back-to-back games. Her fourth of the season was set up from assists by Mia McKee and
Makena Welby.
Haylie Biever was fantastic once again in her third start coming off of injury. She steered away 27 of 28 shots.
The Beavers will have a quick turnaround as they return to action tomorrow to face another top five team in the McKendree Bearcats. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (CT).
