Minot State opens NSIC play with pair of losses at Concordia, Saint Paul

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- The Beavers opened NSIC play Sunday with a strong pitching performance only to see game one slip away in a last at-bat rally that sparked host Concordia, St. Paul to a doubleheader sweep.

The Golden Bears rallied for three runs for a walk-off, 3-2 victory to start the day, then completed the sweep of Minot State (1-5 overall, 0-2 NSIC) with a 10-6 win in the nightcap. The two teams play another doubleheader starting at noon on Monday.

GAME 1 | Concordia-Saint Paul 3, Minot State 2
ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- The Minot State Beavers took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but could not hold on and fell 3-2 to the hst Concordia, Saint Paul Golden Bears on Sunday in the opening game of an NSIC doubleheader.


Senior Craig Schmich (0-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven.


In the batter's box, the Beavers were led by senior Martin Rodriquez, who went 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI. Senior Cameron Carr put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Grant Gabbert also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.


HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.

The Beavers then held the Golden Bears scoreless before expanding their lead in the seventh inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Rodriquez, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-0. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Concordia, Saint Paul scored three times in the bottom half of the seventh to grab the 3-2 win.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- Four Minot State players recorded at least two hits, but the Beavers fell to the Concordia, Saint Paul Golden Bears 10-6 on Sunday in NSIC play.

Junior Gage Yost (0-2) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Conner Meldrim was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.

Junior Seugjun Song led the hit barrage for the Beavers, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 3-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Minot State plated two runs when Bagshaw left the yard with Song aboard.


The Beavers deficit grew to 10-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the eighth inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from senior Cameron Carr, which tightened the Golden Bears lead to 10-5.


Minot State kept the Golden Bears off the board before narrowing the gap to 10-6 in the ninth. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Gunnar Kozlowitz. The ballgame ended with that ninth-inning rally falling short.
