Minot State baseball drops doubleheader on road to SW Minnesota State

WAYNE, Neb. – The Minot State baseball team couldn't find its rhythm offensively, falling 5-1 and 10-3 to Southwest Minnesota State in an NSIC doubleheader played in Wayne, Nebraska on Thursday.
 
Minot State (7-13 overall, 4-6 NSIC) plays the Mustangs in another NSIC doubleheader on Friday with the teams meeting in South Sioux City, Nebraska with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
 
GAME 1 | Southwest Minnesota State 5, Minot State 1
WAYNE, Neb. -- Sophomore Noah Madas went 1-for-1 for the Minot State Beavers in a 5-1 loss to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Thursday.
 
Senior Craig Schmich (1-4) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Conner Meldrim was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing one hit, with one walk and two strikeouts.
 
Offensively, the Beavers were led by Madas, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a walk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 2-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Senior Cameron Carr came across to score the lone run of the inning on a Grant Gabbert sacrifice fly for Minot State and get them on the board. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Southwest Minnesota State added three runs to their tally on the way to a 5-1 final.
 
GAME NOTES
» Minot State pitchers faced 30 Southwest Minnesota State hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and three fly balls while striking out six.

WAYNE, Neb. -- Though they had plenty of opportunities, Minot State struggled to cash them in, leaving 10 Beavers on base in a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Thursday.
 
Senior Trevyn Badger (1-2) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss.
 
Offensively, the Beavers were led by senior Ricky Apodaca, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a walk and two RBI. Senior Martin Rodriquez furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Brian Parry also chipped in for Minot State, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Rodriquez, scoring junior Brent Riddle from second base.
 
The Beavers lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 6-1. Minot State picked up two runs when a single from Apodaca scored junior Seugjun Song and Parry, which tightened the Mustangs lead to 6-3. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Southwest Minnesota State added four runs to their tally on the way to a 10-3 final.
