Beavers come out strong, top Mavericks in game 1 of NSIC doubleheader split

MANKATO, Minn. – Noah Madas led the way at the plate with three hits and five RBIs while Craig Schmich set the tone on the hill with seven strikeouts in six innings work as the Minot State baseball team split an NSIC doubleheader on the road Friday.
 
Madas and Schmich teamed up to power the Beavers (9-18 overall, 6-11 NSIC) to a 7-3 win in the opener before the Mavericks (16-11, 12-5) rallied to take the nightcap 13-3 in 7 innings.
 
The two teams play another NSIC doubleheader on Saturday.
 
GAME 1 | Minot State 7, Minnesota State 3
MANKATO, Minn. -- Sophomore Noah Madas collected four RBIs to help lead the Minot State Beavers over the Minnesota State Mavericks 7-3 on Friday.
 
Senior Craig Schmich (2-5) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing three walks and striking out seven.
 
Madas went 2-for-4 with a home run in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Mark Ossanna furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw also contributed for Minot State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Minot State plated two runs when Ossanna left the yard with junior Grant Gabbert aboard.
 
The Beavers then held the Mavericks scoreless before expanding their lead in the fourth inning. Minot State scored three times, with an output that included back-to-back homers from Madas and Bagshaw, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers.
 
Minot State held Minnesota State scoreless before expanding their lead to 7-0 the following inning. The Beavers scored two runs when a single from Madas scored Ossanna and junior Javier Gutierrez. Minnesota State put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 7-3 win.

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minot State Beavers got three hits from junior Brian Parry in a 13-3 loss to the Minnesota State Mavericks on Friday.
 
Senior Trevyn Badger (1-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State.
 
In addition to his three hits, Parry had an RBI to lead the Beavers. Senior Ricky Apodaca compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Noah Madas also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 5-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State got an RBI single from Apodaca, scoring Parry from third base.
 
The Mavericks expanded their lead to 8-1 before the Beavers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Parry's single, which tightened the Mavericks lead to 8-3. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Minnesota State added five runs to their tally on the way to a 13-3 final.
