Beavers rally late but fall in overtime to Jamestown in home opener

MINOT, ND -- The #3 Minot State Beavers men's hockey team battled hard in their home opener on Saturday night but fell just short in overtime, dropping a 4-3 decision to in-state rival #6 University of Jamestown at the Maysa Arena. With the loss, the Beavers move to 1-0-1 on the season, while Jamestown improves to 5-1-0.

Jamestown opened the scoring early in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead at 5:21 into the period on a goal by Carter Johnson. The Jimmies' goaltender, Brandon Weare, stopped all nine shots he faced in the opening frame to keep Minot State off the board.

In the second period, Johnson struck again for Jamestown, extending the lead to 2-0 at 14:11 into the period. Weare continued his strong play between the pipes, turning away all 12 shots on goal in the period to maintain the two-goal advantage heading into the final frame.

The Beavers found their spark in the third period as Colby Joseph cut the deficit to 2-1 at 7:31 into the period. Jamestown answered quickly, regaining a two-goal cushion at 9:04 into the period on a tally from Tanner Freed. Minot State responded with a surge of offense, capitalizing on back-to-back power plays. Christian Kadolph scored at 11:37 into the period to make it 3-2, followed by Jay Buchholz, who tied the game 3-3 at 17:06 into the period to force overtime.

In the extra period, Jamestown's Brad Fortin netted the game-winning goal at 3:18 into the period, giving the Jimmies the 4-3 victory.

Slade Stanick, Colby Joseph, Austin Clyne, and Joey Moffatt were credited with assists for the Beavers in the contest.

After splitting the two-game series with Jamestown, the Beavers will remain at home for another two-game set against Maryville University. Game one is scheduled for Friday, October 17, at 7:30 pm, followed by game two on Saturday, October 18, at 7:30 pm at the Maysa Arena.
