Minot State settles for split, falls to visiting Maryville on Saturday

MINOT, N.D. – After a stellar outing Friday night, things changed Saturday afternoon for the Minot State women's hockey team.

Less than 24 hours after shutting out the Saints, the Beavers fell behind early and couldn't claw back in front, falling 5-1 to visiting Maryville in WMCH action at the Maysa Arena, splitting the weekend series.

Maryville (3-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 WMCH) scored twice in the opening 6:04 of action, both goals coming on the power play, to take control early.

Marlie Rutherford netted her first of the year for the Beavers, off assists from Olivia Kirwan and Karlyn Gudz, cutting the margin to 2-1, but Minot State (2-2-0, 2-2-0) could get no closer.

A goal with 28 seconds left before the first intermission reestablished the Saints' two-goal lead, and it stayed that way until the third period when Maryville added two more goals to thwart any Beaver comeback plans.

Jillian Ackerman, who made 20 saves in Friday's shutout win, was far busier on Saturday, turning aside 39 shots for Minot State.

The Beavers now hit the road for a challenging four-game stretch next week, playing at Adrian (Mich.) on Thursday and Friday, then at Niagara on Saturday and Sunday.
