MINOT, ND -- The #2 Minot State Beavers men's hockey team completed the series sweep of #8 Maryville University with a 5-2 win on Saturday night at the Maysa Arena. With the victory, the Beavers improve to 3-0-1 on the season, while Maryville falls to 5-4-0.
Minot State opened the scoring in the first period on the power play as Jaxson Grosdidier found the back of the net at 9:25 into the period, assisted by
Logan Rands, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead after the opening frame.
The Beavers took control in the second period with four goals.
Matthew Yakubowski made it 2-0 at 3:05 into the period with assists credited to
Kieran Cooke and
Christian Kadolph. Maryville got on the board at 11:11 into the period on a goal scored by Will Smith, but Minot State responded quickly on the power play when
Sheldin Howard scored at 13:47 into the period off assists from
Reece Henry and
Christian Kadolph. Another power-play goal followed at 16:00 into the period when
Reece Henry buried his second point of the night, assisted by
Christian Kadolph and
Colby Joseph, extending the lead to 4-1.
Jeremy Dewar capped off the period with his first goal as a Beaver at 18:29 into the period, assisted by
Slade Stanick, making it 5-1 heading into the third.
Maryville added a power-play goal from Sam Edwards at 10:06 into the third period, but the Beavers closed out the 5-2 win with strong defensive play.
Minot State went 3-for-8 on the power play and held Maryville to 1-for-6.
William Dyke led the way in goal for the Beavers turning aside 30 of 32 shots, improving to 3-0-1 on the season.
Following the two-game series sweep over #8 Maryville University, the Beavers will head to Fremont, Nebraska, for a two-game series against Midland University. Game one is scheduled for Friday, October 24, at 7:00 pm, with game two set for Saturday, October 25, at 7:00 pm.
