Beaver women wrestlers pin down pair of wins in NSIC Duals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – It was a very successful day in South Dakota for the Minot State women's wrestling team.

Competing alongside their two NSIC rivals in Jamestown and Sioux Falls, the Beavers came up with a pair of dual wins Sunday at the NSIC Duals hosted by the Cougars.

Minot State (2-1 duals) opened with a 28-9 victory over in-state rival Jamestown, then battled its way to a 28-19 win over Sioux Falls.

"We had a great showing, several key athletes stepped up when we needed," Minot State's coach Brittney Mitchem said. "Everyone in our lineup wrestled smart and took advantage of every opportunity, and wrestled through every position.

"The team feels great to take away these wins and set a tone for a potential future conference."

Skye Shelmerdine, Alyssa Jones, Haleigh Lematta, and Aniya Herbin led the way on the day as each picked up a pair of wins for the Beavers, while Kaiya Lopes also earned a pair of forfeit victories and a win in an extra match.

Shelmerdine picked up a 10-0 technical fall victory over Kiera Hagman of Jamestown in their 124-pound match, then she added a win by pin in 1 minute, 29 seconds over Sioux Falls' Hanah Schuster.

Jones picked up both of her wins by pin as she pinned Jamestown's Nora Houglum in 3:43, then pinned Teila Peters from Sioux Falls in 5:51 at 131 pounds.

Adding two wins at 145, Lematta earned a 10-0 technical fall win over Jamestown's Ann Meiman, then thanks to a late, 2-point takedown, earned a tie-breaker decision win in a 10-10 battle with Sioux Falls' Kristy More.

Herbin finished off both dual wins for the Beavers wrestling at 207 pounds as she pinned Celia Jaeger from Jamestown in 3:33, then she scored a win by decision with a 9-5 score over Sioux Falls' Zoe Adam.

The Beavers also got a win by pin at 138 pounds from Puakela Beeba, who stopped Jamestown's Abby Ewing in 1:39, and a win by pin in 3:57 from Madilyn Schuck at 180 pounds in her match with Sioux Falls' Aliyah Villarreal.

And adding a 14-4 technical fall win in that extra match was Lopes in a bout with Sioux Falls' Paw Hobza, which did not figure into the team scoring.

Riding the momentum of the back-to-back wins, Minot State now returns to the MSU Dome to make its home season debut, hosting the 4th annual Beaver Bash Duals on Friday, starting at 10 a.m., then the inaugural Beaver Bash Open tournament on Saturday, with wrestling starting at 9 a.m.
