Beavers baseball battles way to another spilt with Wildcats

WAYNE, Neb. - For the second straight day on the road, the Minot State baseball team bounced back strong after a loss to secure a split with host Wayne State. 

After dropping the opener of an NSIC doubleheader 22-5 to the Wildcats, the Beavers (12-8 overall, 7-5 NSIC) responded with a 7-5 decision in the nightcap. 

Minot State next makes its home debut this coming weekend, hosting Southwest Minnesota State in doubleheaders at Corbett Field on Saturday and Sunday. 

GAME 1 | Wayne State (NE) 22, Minot State 6
WAYNE, Neb. -- A solid offensive output was not enough for Minot State on Sunday. The Beavers scored six runs, but could not hold the Wayne State Wildcats at bay, and were bested 22-6.

Freshman Wyatt Toth (1-3) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss.

In the batter's box, the Beavers were led by junior Oscar Pegg, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Senior Grant Gabbert put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Jake Orthner also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Junior Noah Madas came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.

The Wildcats then rallied to score 15 runs and take a 15-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fifth. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Orthner, which brought the score to 15-5 in favor of the Wildcats.

Wayne State built their lead to 17-5 before the Minot State offense got going, reducing that lead to 17-6 in the sixth. The Beavers recorded a run on Pegg's leadoff home run off freshman Carson Obrecht. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Wayne State added five runs to their tally on the way to a 22-6 final.

WAYNE, Neb. -- Junior Colton Bagshaw collected three hits to help lead the Minot State Beavers over the Wayne State Wildcats 7-5 Sunday.

Junior Anthony Disantis (2-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing five walks and striking out four. Junior Ian Bauer also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits.

In addition to his three hits, Bagshaw had an RBI to lead the Beavers. Junior Noah Madas furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Seugjun Song also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Minot State scored twice, with one run coming across on Bagshaw's single.

The Beavers lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 3-2. Minot State picked up two runs when a single from Madas scored Bagshaw and Song, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Beavers.

Minot State kept Wayne State without a run before building their lead to 7-3 in the sixth inning. Wayne State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 7-5 win.
