ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Senior Grant Gabbert strung together three hits, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the Saint Cloud State Huskies 12-4 on Sunday in the finale of their 3-game NSIC series.
Senior Noah Balandran (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Minot State (16-28 overall, 10-25 NSIC). Sophomore Ayden Sauerbrei was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
In addition to his three hits, Gabbert had a double to lead the Beavers. Junior Oscar Pegg compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Freshman Wyatt Toth also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
Minot State now returns home to host Bemidji State in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at noon at Corbett Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Pegg put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off junior Cael Kolacia.
The Beavers then held the Huskies scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Beavers. Toth and Kekoa Munos each had an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning.
Minot State's lead had disappeared by the time the fifth inning came around and turned into an 8-3 Saint Cloud State advantage, when the Beavers cut that deficit to 8-4. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Noah Madas. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Saint Cloud State added four runs to their tally on the way to a 12-4 final.
