Minot State women close out WMCH Showcase with shootout win

LEBANON, Ill. – The Minot State women got to celebrate a shootout victory Friday afternoon, wrapping up a successful, weather-shortened weekend at the WMCH Showcase.

Battling No. 4 McKendree for the third time this season, the teams ended up tying, 3-3, with the 5th-ranked Beavers taking bragging rights with a win in the shootout.

The Beavers (12-6-6 overall, 8-6-2 WMCH) now return home to host Midland next Friday and Saturday at the Maysa Arena, with puck-drop slated for 3:45 p.m. each day.

The Beavers' game Saturday against Liberty at the WMCH Showcase and the WMCH All-Star Game on Sunday, both were canceled earlier this week because of the threat of a winter storm in the St. Louis area.

Friday against the Bearcats, Minot State battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits as Paige Kozak scored in the first period, tying it 1-1, and Erica Fijala scored to make it 2-2 in the second period.

Cameron Schmidt's third-period goal gave Minot State the lead, briefly, before McKendree tied it midway through the final period, forcing overtime. After a scoreless overtime session, resulting in a tie for the official result, Minot State won in a shootout.
