ALBERT LEA, Minn. - With a third-period surge, the Beavers claimed their second MCH Tournament title.
Walker Jerome scored the game-winner 3 minutes, 15 seconds into the final stanza, breaking a 1-1 tie with No. 11-ranked Mary, as the top-ranked Minot State men's hockey team skated away with a 3-1 victory in the MCH title game.
Matthew Yakubowski added an insurance goal with 8 minutes left to play for the Beavers, who scored all three of their goals on the power-play on Sunday.
Christian Kadolph and
Austin Clyne set up Jerome's game-winner, while
Jay Buchholz and
Joey Moffatt assisted on Yakubowski's goal.
Minot State (27-1-1-1 overall) took the early lead when
Colby Joseph scored a power-play goal 12:02 into the contest.
Logan Rands and Buchholz assisted on the goal.
Mary answered with a power-play goal of its own late in the first period, then after a scoreless second period, the Beavers took control and won it in the third.
William Dyke finished with 26 saves in goal for Minot State in the win. The tournament title was the second straight for the Beavers in their second season as a member of the MCH conference.
The No. 1-ranked Beavers now set their sights on the ACHA National Tournament in Maryland Heights, Missouri, as Minot State shoots for its 4th national championship.
The quest for the title begins on Friday, March 14, for the Beavers, who earned a first-round bye and await an opponent to be determined. The Beavers will face-off at 8 p.m. in their first game on March 14.
Quarterfinal action will be Sunday, March 16, with the semifinals on Monday, March 17, and the title game at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18.
