MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Beavers didn't want to be in this position: Wait and see.
The 3
rd-ranked Minot State women's hockey team fell 2-1 to No. 6 Michigan-Dearborn on Thursday in pool play at the ACHA National Tournament, and with the setback the Beavers now must wait on the outcome of Friday's contest between Jamestown and Michigan-Dearborn to find out if they'll be moving on to the national semifinals.
The winner of each three-team pool advances to Saturday's semifinals, and the Beavers sit at 1-1 in pool play after a 5-4 overtime win Wednesday against Jamestown and Thursday's loss.
Minot State will need the Jimmies to beat Michigan-Dearborn on Friday to force a three-way tie between the teams, forcing the decision of who wins the pool to tie-breakers.
Minot State (19-8-7) could have wrapped up a spot in the semifinals with a win over the Wolverines (30-2-1), but Michigan-Dearborn jumped in front 3 minutes, 33 seconds into the game Thursday and the Beavers played catch-up the rest of the day.
Still just a 1-0 contest, Michigan-Dearborn added to its lead with a power-play goal midway through the game, then held that 2-0 advantage into the third period.
Marlie Rutherford's unassisted goal got Minot State on the board with 16:26 left in regulation, and while the Beavers fought to even the score, outshooting the Wolverines 14-6 in the final period, Rutherford's goal was all they'd net on the day.
Jillian Ackerman made 28 saves in goal in the contest for Minot State.
