JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Minot State women's hockey team waited until the last second – literally – to net the win Friday night at Jamestown.
In the season opener for both teams, the Beavers battled back in the third period and scored the decisive goal with 1 second left in regulation for a 2-1 victory.
Along with being the opening game of the season, it was the debut for new Minot State head coach Blake Zabinski, as well.
Jamestown (0-1-0 overall) took the early lead with a goal midway through the first period, then maintained that advantage into the third period.
But with 7 minutes, 19 seconds left in the contest, freshman
Jade Olszewski scored her first collegiate goal, knotting the score at 1-1.
Erica Fijala and
Karlyn Gudz had the assists on the goal.
From there, the game remained tied and looked to be headed for overtime when
Kinley Brassard put in the winner with 1 second left on the clock, finishing off assists by
Abby Tallman and
Paige Crossley.
Jillian Ackerman made 15 saves in goal for her first win of the season for Minot State (1-0-0), which outshot the Jimmies 42-16 in the contest.
The two teams meet again at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their season-opening weekend series in Jamestown.
