Athletic Advisory Council
Department of Athletics
General Principles
The NCAA does not require member institutions to have an athletics advisory council. However, it does consider such a group to be highly desirable.
An athletic advisory council can provide advice to the Director of Athletics and President on matters relating to the athletics budget, sports configuration, gender equity/Title IX and facilities.
It can play a significant role in documenting institutional control over athletics. It can be used to receive and review copies of the Compliance Manual, Student-Athlete Handbook, Operating Policies Manual, and annual financial audit.
It may also review and advise on student-athlete welfare issues such as academic progress, graduation rates, summary statements from student-athlete exit interviews, personal conduct of student-athletes and other matters pertaining to athletic programs and personnel.
An athletics advisory council can also play a significant role in modifying university policy to better serve student-athletes. It can review EADA submissions, graduation and persistence rate reports, medical hardship waiver requests, a summary of rules violations reported and a summary of any student-athlete reinstatement requests.
The athletic advisory council should have direct access to the President and should meet with the President at least annually.
