Tanner Spencer enters his second season as the Head Assistant Coach at Minot State University. Spencer primarily coaches the Beaver pitching staff and coordinates recruiting. He also oversees academics, community service and assists Head Coach Scott Eul in fundraising efforts.
In 2018-19 Spencer helped guide the Beavers to a school-record 36 win campaign. Along the way, the Beaver pitching staff surpassed the school record in strikeouts by nearly 100 (417). The 2018/19 Beaver pitching staff featured second team All-Conference performer Jaymon Cervantes, who set the single-season school record in wins (9), shutouts (2) and strikeouts (78). The unit also included Jack Gamba, who went on to set the single-season saves record (7).
Spencer spent the 2017-18 season as the Pitching coach on Damon Day’s staff at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In his first season, the Loper pitching staff reduced their E.R.A. by nearly two runs from the previous year. The 17/18 season also saw the Lopers strikeout 403 batters, shattering the school record for strikeouts in a season. Along with the group accolades, individual members of the Loper pitching staff won three MIAA pitcher of the week awards. Josh Cooper was named second team All-MIAA, and Alex Achtermann was named the conference player of the year for his efforts at the plate and on the mound. Achtermann would go on to be drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 30th round of the 2018/19 MLB draft.
Spencer spent the summers of 2017 and 2018 as the Pitching Coach of the Moose Jaw Miller Express of the WMBL.
The native of Craik, Saskatchewan, Canada, enjoyed a two-year playing career at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Prior to U.N.K., Spencer played at Colby Community College in Northwest Kansas for two seasons. As a high school player, Spencer attended Vauxhall Academy. Spencer also spent parts of two seasons on the Canadian Junior National Team.
Spencer graduated from U.N.K. with a Bachelor's in Exercise Science. He is also a graduate of Minot State University with a Masters in Sports Management.
Coach Spencer and his wife Kylee currently reside in Minot.
