MINOT, N.D. - Minot State University freshman Nicole Matsumoto (Midfielder, Fresno, Calif.) scored in the 63rd minute to net the Beavers soccer program's first ever goal and a stingy MSU defense made it hold up in a 1-0 win over Bemidji State Friday at Herb Parker Stadium.
Matsumoto lifted a perfect ball over Bemidji State's goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas while she was being taken down outside the box. The goal set off a wild celebration on the field and in the stands. The game was played in front of a big, boisterous first-game crowd at the Herb.
Bemidji tried to get the equalizer late, but MSU's keeper Marie Torres (G, Jr., Burlingame, Calif.) made a couple of key saves.
Matsumoto also had the dubious distinction of earning the program's first yellow card late in the second half.
MSU held a 9-8 shots edge and controlled the early play. BSU finished with 14 fouls in an exhibition match for the Minnesota Beavers.
Minot State (1-0 overall) plays again Sunday at Herb Parker Stadium as they play host to Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m.
