Minot State falls on last second field goal

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – It took until just over a minute to play, but the turnover bug bit Minot State University football again.

Black Hills State's Devin Rounds kicked a 23-yard field with 12 seconds to play after the Yellow Jackets' Joey Brown picked off MSU quarterback C.J. Evans (R-Fr., Havre, Mont.) and returned it to the Beavers' 19.

Rounds and Brown helped BHSU snap a five-game losing streak to MSU with a 10-7 win in nonconference NCAA Division II football Saturday at Lyle Hare Stadium.
“I thought it was not a very good display of offensive football on our part,” said MSU head coach Paul Rudolph. “I think our o-line was pretty poor especially in a couple spots. They (Black Hills defense) flat out outplayed our offense, no doubt about it.”

The game ended similar to the MSU win over BHSU earlier in the season as the Beavers turned the ball over late in the game, giving the Yellow Jackets a chance for the win. This time, however, Minot State's defense wasn't able to turn back BHSU, allowing the game-winner by Rounds.

The win pushed BHSU to 2-7 overall, while MSU fell to 2-7 as both are in the process of moving to NCAA Division II status. The Beavers are in Year Three Provisional status, while BHSU is in the second year of process.

BHSU hadn't beaten MSU since 2006, but the past few games were tight. MSU defeated BHSU 20-16 earlier in the season, 17-14 last year and 23-13 in 2009.

The MSU defense basically gave up one big play on the day and it proved to be enough to set up the game winner for BHSU. Yellow Jackets' quarterback Wes Kragt found Ryan Fagerstrom on a 65-yard scoring strike with 8:05 to play in the first quarter. It was just under half of Kragt's total passing yards of 129 in the game.

MSU countered with a 13-yard TD pass from Evans to Nate Christianson (So., WR, Havre, Mont.) midway through the second quarter. Evans threw a fade pass to Christiason, who hauled in his third score of the season.

Nearly every statistic favored the Beavers as MSU ran 85 plays compared to just 57 for the Yellow Jackets and outgained BHSU 327-260. MSU finished with 21 first downs, 139 yards rushing and 188 yards passing.

The defense gave us everything, they gave us a chance to win, but unfortunately our offense lost it for us,” Rudolph said.

Tyson Schatz (Sr., RB, Minot, N.D.) gained 84 yards on 24 carries to lead the Beavers ground game. Nico Youngren (Jr., RB, Gig Harbor, Wash.) added 35 yards on nine carries. Evans was 13 for 20 for 104 yards and a score for the Beavers. Christianson, who was injured late in the game, led the team with a career-high 11 catches for 76 yards and the TD.

Bryar DeSanti gained 77 yards on 24 carries to lead the Yellow Jackets. Kragt was 11 for 18 with the TD and a pair of interceptions – both to MSU's Laron Peoples (Jr., DB, Pontiac, Mich.).

Chad Marshall (So., LB, Hazen, N.D.) had 10 tackles for the second straight week, while Brian Sorensen (Jr., LB, Hazen, N.D.) added 6.5 tackles to pace the Beavers defense.

MSU is off now until traveling to San Antonio, Texas for a season finale with UT-San Antonio at the Alomodome Nov. 19. The game time is not set as of right as the Longhorn Network, which has broadcast rights, will make a decision to a start time next week.
