Minot State solid in opening dual win

Beavers take seven matches to earn 31-10 win

Box Score

MINOT, N.D. – It didn't quite have the dramatics from the 2010 home opener, but Minot State was as solid on the mat a year later.

Minot State University wrestling finished with eight wins – including a pin and a major decision – to defeat Jamestown College 31-10 in NCAA Division II wrestling Wednesday at the MSU Dome.

The win ran the Beavers record to 1-0 on the season in duals and upped MSU's home record to 3-1 in duals since reinstating wrestling last season.

MSU was in control from the beginning. After a pair of forfeits, the Beavers' first two wrestlers set the tone with wins. Deon Buhl (Sr., Lacey, Wash.) defeated Zach Behrend 6-1 at 141 pounds to open the scoring and Drew Spaulding (Fr., Bismarck, N.D.) added a 9-4 win over Zach Pickering at 149.

But the most interesting matches were to come.

MSU's Marcus Bausman (Fr., Minot, N.D.) defeated Michael Nord in an exciting match, winning 6-4 at 165. The match was stopped early on and reset after a ruling was overturned by MSU coach Robin Ersland. Bausman finished off the match with a takedown in overtime.

Jamestown College got two of its three wins at 174 and 184 as Marlon Branson earned a 19-7 win over Luke Michaelson (So., Williston, N.D.) and Pat Nord added a 13-10 win over Cody George (Jr., Clancy, Mont.).

But the Beavers capped the night off with a major decision by Wade Weppler (Sr., Minot, N.D.) and Sean Small's (So., Marianna, Fla.) first collegiate pin, catching Gary Blair at 2:31.

MSU will have little time to celebrate as the Beavers head to Willmar, Minn., for the Ridgewater Duals Friday.
