Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University remained perfect in home openers.
The Beavers knocked off Dordt College (Iowa) 2-1 at Herb Parker Stadium, making it 2-for-2 in the young program's history after last season's inaugural 1-0 win over Bemidji State.
This year's home opener didn't quite have the ambiance as last years and the match wasn't much like 2010's either. MSU ground out a win last year, but the 2011 Beavers jumped out to a lead and held offa late charge.
“We have to learn how to win,” said MSU head coach
Jason Spain. “Up 2-0 is it, we shouldn't be worried. We don't need to foul diving at players. We are playing a lot of young kids and I was pretty happy overall with how we played. But it got a little closer that we would have liked at the end.”
MSU (3-0-0) got going early generating much of the offense in the first 20 minutes, but couldn't get a goal. Still, Spain was happy with the early play.
“We are playing a lot of different kids and there isn't one on the bench that I don't trust,” he said. “Now, sure, you have better players, but we are pretty happy with how our young kids are coming along.”
The Beavers got on the board
Jamie Council (So., F, Atascadero, Calif.) knocked in a pass from
Brittany Hunt (Jr., Mid, Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 41st minute. Hunt would later get a goal of her own to make it 2-0 early in the second half.
“Jamie has been a part of four of our six goals this year and she only plays about half of the match,” Spain said. “She is really good around the net and makes plays. She's big and commands attention. If she isn't getting the goal, she's creating for someone else.”
Dordt (2-2-0) got on the board in the second half as Kelly Smies scored on a cross from Rindy De Nooy in the 85th minute. From there, it was anybody's game as the Defenders were able to generate shots on goal.
“We got a little panicky,” Spain said.
Spain switched goalkeepers late in the match and after giving up the late goal, came back with starter Ashley Barcewski (Jr., O'Fallon, Mo.), who completed the match for her third win of the season. She hasn't given up a goal in her past 197 minutes played.
MSU outshot Dordt 12-11 in the match, but were outshot 8-1 in the second half. MSU held an 11-3 advantage at halftime.
The Beavers will get a chance to make it two years in a row as they play host to Bemidji State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium.
