Winning streak ends in OT

Minot State falls 2-1 in overtime to Bemidji

Box Score
MINOT, N.D. – Last season, Bemdiji State wasn't able to play spoiler.

Minot State University fended off a pesky BSU Beavers team to win 1-0 in its inaugural women's soccer match.

This time around, however, Bemidji was able to take the wind out of the MSU sails. Bemidji State's Kirsten Erickson score an unassisted goal in the third minute of overtime to end the Beavers winning streak at three as BSU took a 2-1 over MSU Sunday at Herb Parker Stadium.

It was just the second loss in eight regular season matches at the Herb and the first home setback since falling 1-0 to Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) Oct. 9, 2010.

Bemidji State (1-3-0 overall) put MSU on its heals early on as Mary O'Brien scored on a solid feed from Bri Scanlan in just the sixth minute. It was the first goal given up by MSU's Ashley Barcewski (Jr., GK, O'Fallon, Mo.) in two and a half matches.

It looked like the one goal lead might hold up as MSU clanged two shots of the cross bar and had two shots sail high during a flurry late in the first half.

Minot State (3-1-0) tied the match late in the first half with a Chantal Paradis (Fr., D, Battle Ground, Wash.) floater off a direct kick from about 35 yards out that sailed over BSU's goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas.

The teams battled to a tie at the end of regulation as both teams had goal opportunities and both teams pushed, shoved and scraped with each other.

Erickson, however, ended overtime pretty quickly as she pushed through the MSU defense for the game winner.

Minot State held a 14-8 lead in shots, but BSU made the most of its shots, having a 6-5 shots on goal advantage. Erickson led the way with three on goal, while MSU's Sidney Bockoven (So., Mid, Elk Grove, Calif.) had two on goal for the Minot Beavers.

MSU heads out on the road for a quick match with Minnesota Crookston Wednesday, before returning home for a two-match homestand during homecoming week. MSU plays host to the University of Mary Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. and takes on Augustana College Friday, Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m.

The AC match has been moved up due to a scheduling conflict with MSU volleyball, which takes the court at 7p.m. against Valley City State.
