MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University needed just one more match to go its way.
Or even more move within a match.
The Beavers battled Dickinson State to a 5-5 tie in weights won, but the Blue Hawks took the win on the scoreboard 25-21 in nonconference NCAA Division II wrestling Thursday at the MSU Dome.
The dual was just half of The Double Dual at the Dome as Minot State partnered with Minot High for an exciting night of grappling. Minot High overcame an early deficit to defeat Mandan 42-30 in a West Region match.
In the collegiate match, MSU opened with an early deficit as the Beavers had an open at 125 and lost two of the next three to trail 12-3 four weights into the match. But it was the Blue Hawks who needed to earn the comeback win as Jose Lopez pinned MSU's
Osinachi Nwachukwu (Minneapolis, Minn.) in the heavyweight match to lift the Hawks.
The only win came in one of the most entertaining matches of the night as MSU's
Joshua Douglas (Panama City, Fla.) worked a takedown in overtime to defeat Clayton Steinmetz 14-12 at 133 pounds.
MSU's
Marcus Bausman (Fr., Minot, N.D.) got the Beavers going after the early deficit, earning a fall at 157. Bausman controlled most of the match with DSU's Jake Sherbrune, taking the pin at 1:58. The Beavers'
Drew Spaulding (Fr., Bismarck, N.D.) kept the pins coming with a fall over Manny Reyes at 2:09 of their 165-pound match.
The turning point of the match might have taken place at 174. MSU's
Jaymes Stanley (Fr., Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) jumped out to an early lead over Kenny Finalyson and came close multiple times from scoring the third pin in a row for MSU, but Finalyson was able to keep his shoulders off the mat. Still, the Beavers jumped ahead 18-13 following the Stanley win.
The teams traded wins at 184 (DSU's Jesse Hellinger) and 197 (MSU's
Wade Weppler, Jr., Minot, N.D.). Weppler was in control the entire way despite a shoulder injury early in the match, taking the 8-1 win.
The Blue Hawks' Adam Orton and Brad Steele earned wins at 141 and 149 respectively to help DSU to the early lead.
MSU will remain at home this weekend as the Beavers host the 2012 Minot State University Open Saturday at the MSU Dome. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. with schools from around the region expected to participate.
