Torres, Minot State perfect on the weekend

Senior goalkeeper Marie Torres earns another shutout

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University goalkeeper Marie Torres (San Bruno, Calif.) didn't yield a goal on the weekend as the Beavers won another 1-0 match, topping Augustana College in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer Sunday.

It was the third straight 1-0 road win for Minot State and the fifth 1-0 win for the Beavers on the season.

“I was thinking about that in the second half and said why does it seem like it always comes down to a 1-0 game,” said MISU head coach Jason Spain. “We always seem to give up a late corner or a late shot, too. We were able to grind out another win.”

Torres earned her 10th win of the season and her sixth shutout, both school records. She finished with three saves Sunday and has 74 on the season. Torres has not surrendered a goal since the 50 th minute against Minnesota State Sept. 30. She has gone 357 minutes, 90 seconds without surrendering a goal and has three straight 1-0 wins.

“Marie has been really good for us,” Spain said.

The Beavers (10-3-1 overall, 8-3-0 NSIC) also got a big goal from someone other than Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England), the Beavers leading scorer. Sunday it was freshman Ryann Rafferty (D, Littleton, Colo.) who scored on a rebound after the Beavers hit the crossbar from a corner kick.

“After the loss at Upper Iowa, we said we need to find more goals. Not just from different people, but score goals in different ways,” Spain said. “We have worked on corners and on free kicks and they are starting to come around.”

It was Rafferty's second goal of the year in the 71st minute. Fellow freshman Gemma Biasetto (G/F, Albuquerque, N.M.) earned an assist on the play.

The Beavers outshot Augustana College (4-8-2 overall, 3-6-2 NSIC) 17-13, including a big 13-4 advantage in the second half.

The win sets up a big Saturday contest for Minot State as they play host to Bemidji State beginning at 11 a.m. Minot State leads BSU by two points for fourth in the conference with four matches to play. MISU trails third place Upper Iowa by just one point.

“We have put ourselves in a good spot for a home playoff game. The match with Bemidji is huge,” said Spain. “We also have put some pressure on Upper Iowa. If we can win out it forces them to win out and they have to play Minnesota State still. We need to keep grinding.”
