Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's
Emilie Rebelo (So., F, Sacramento, Calif.) took five shots before lining up for a free kick from 22 yards out in overtime.
All five had missed the net wide or high.
The sixth and final shot for Rebelo was hammered right on.
Rebelo nailed the game-winner in the 96th minute to complete a second-half comeback for Minot State as the Beavers defeated Bemidji State University 2-1 in overtime in a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer match Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.
“It felt it. As soon as I was fouled, I got up, got the ball and I saw there was a few minutes left and felt it coming,” Rebelo said. “I knew it was our chance.”
The win gives Minot State (11-3-1 overall, 9-3-0 NSIC) a five-point cushion over BSU (9-5-1, 7-4-1) for fourth place and keeps the Beavers within one point of Upper Iowa with three matches remaining.
“She practices those kick a lot,” said MISU head coach
Jason Spain on Rebelo's game-winner. “I think that is a key. A lot of the freshmen help her you in practice by creating walls and what not. The big thing of her is confidence. She made that kick because she knew she could.”
The kick capped a rally by Minot State after trailing 1-0 early on a Jessie Voeller goal for Bemidji State in the 16th minute. Minot State tied the match at 1 on a goal by freshman
Gemma Biasetto (G/F, Albuquerque, N.M.) off a feed from
Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) in the 58th minute.
“We don't like to be down in a half, we aren't used to that,” Rebelo said. “We came together after that goal and we said 'this is our game, we don't lose at home' and everyone pushed each other to the end of the game.”
The two teams traded punches and counter punches in the second half as both goalkeepers made game-saving stops in the final 20 minutes. Minot State's
Marie Torres (Sr., San Bruno, Calif.) finished with three saves for the win, but had two key stops late. BSU's Sonja Barr was busier with 10 saves while suffering the loss and was equal to the challenge late forcing the overtime.
“We did a good job of recognizing what they were trying to do to us in the second half,” Spain said. “We brought in some bigs to make things a little more difficult for them. I thought
Jamie Council (Jr., F, Atascadero, Calif.) and Gemma did a great job of not making it easy for them to get over the top. We recognized we needed flatten them out instead of going over the top, and that is what led to our success.”
Minot State pushed its winning streak to five games and will look to make it six as the Beavers play host to Minnesota Crookston Sunday at 2 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium.
