RECENT HISTORY: The Beavers rolled over Minnesota Crookston to even its NSIC North record at 2-2 with a 38-14 win. Moorhead fell short at the University of Mary 23-7 in Bismarck, N.D.
OVERALL SERIES: Minot State holds a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series, dating back to 1930. Minot State and MSU Moorhead haven't met in football since a 1976 where the Dragons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 28-14 win over Minot State.
NOTING THE DRAGONS: Minnesota State Moorhead is coming off a week where it held the University of Mary to just 274 total yards, yet lost 23-7, mainly due to three costly turnovers in Marauders territory… Offensively, the Dragons have struggled all season, sitting in last in the conference in scoring (14.0 ppg.), total offense (239.2 ypg.), rushing offense (65.1 ypg.) and first downs (116)… Quarterback Jake Hodge has taken the majority of the snaps this season, throwing for 1,136 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions on the season. He also an interesting rushing line as he has gained 251 yards on 72 carries, but has 206 in losses for just a 45 yard net… Kicker Wes Kramer is just 1 for 4 on field goals this season, but has been solid in PATs with 13 of 15 attempts. He is second on the team in scoring with 16 points…. Shea DeJong has put together a monster season on defense with 90 total tackles, five tackles for a loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He has an outstanding 46 solo tackles in eight games played.
SMALL STATURE, BIG PRODUCTION: Minot State University junior wide receiver
Glyn Borel (San Jose, Calif.) is listed at just 5-foot-6, 150 pounds, but finished with three touchdowns last week in the win over Minnesota Crookston. Borel caught three passes for 114 yards and two scores and rushed for another touchdown. On the season, Borel has 32 receptions for 498 yards and five TDs. He is also one of the top returners in the conference, racking up 494 yards on 17 kick returns and a 98-yard TD. To top all of that off, Borel won the Minot State “Late Night with Beaver Basketball” student dunk competition last Friday night.
EGGL BACK TO CENTURY MARK: Minot State's
Blake Eggl (Sr., RB, Minot, N.D.) rushed for 109 yards against Minnesota Crookston last week, marking the first Beaver running back to gain 100-plus yards on the ground since
Tyson Schatz gained 102 yards against South Dakota Mines Oct. 15, 2011. But that time frame pales in comparison to Eggl's streak snapped. Eggl's last 100-plus outing was nearly four years to the day as he gained a career-high 119 yards against Dakota Athletic Conference foe Mayville State Oct. 24, 2009. Eggl has a team-leading 459 yards rushing this season, nearly double his career total entering the season and needs just 73 yards to break 1,000 for his career.
ROCK BOTTOM: The Beavers have had one of their worst seasons in turnover margin as MISU is minus-17 overall, dead last in all of NCAA Division II (156th). Minot State's minus-2.13 turnover ratio per game trails Gannon as the worst in DII. Minot State has 25 total turnovers in eight games, which, while isn't very good, isn't at the bottom of DII, but is one of only 10 teams which haven't caused double figures in turnovers. Minot State has just eight take-a-ways this season.
LADEAUX-ING JUST FINE: Freshman punter/kicker
Aaron La Deaux (Port Orchard, Wash.) has had a solid start to his career, including four field goals and 15 PATs for 27 points. He is third on the team in scoring. LaDeaux kicked a 49-yard field goal earlier this season, the longest kick in 10 years and added a 48-yarder last week. He is also averaging 37.12 yards per punt, including a 62-yard kick and seven 50-plus boots.
CHASING 200: Minot State's
Chad Marshall (Jr., LB, Hazen, N.D.) finished with a career high 16 total tackles last week against Crookston and now has 190 tackles in three seasons. Marshall is tied with
Josh Weidler (Jr., LB, Velva, N.D.) for second overall in tackles with 49 this season. Over the past three season, Marshall has six of the top seven total tackle outputs. He had a career-high 81 tackles last season. Weidler is also nearing two milestones as it's all “eights” with him, totaling 88 tackles and eight sacks in his three seasons.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A SEASON MAKES: Minot State only played three home games last season, finishing the year with just over 7,000 total fans in three games. This year, with one home game remaining, the Beavers moved over 10,000 fans, sitting at 10,465 overall for home games – an average of 2,093 per game. The Beavers are ninth overall in the Northern Sun in total attendance and 12th overall in average. Minot State hasn't played in front of the crowds it did last year on the road, however, as MISU played at Texas A&M-Kingsville (13,000), Montana State (13,507) and the largest crowd to watch a Beavers game, 32,369 at the University of Texas San Antonio.
