Beavers secure home playoff game

Minot State settles for tie to clinch fourth

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University soccer team got the point it needed to secure a first-round home playoff game, but it was a hollow celebration.

The Beavers and Minnesota State Moorhead settled for a 0-0 draw Friday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer match at Herb Parker Stadium.

The point secures fourth place in the NSIC in the Beavers first season in the league and sets up a first-round playoff match at The Herb on Wednesday, but Minot State was looking for more. The Beavers had a shot at No. 2 in the conference as Winona State fell to No. 1 ranked Minnesota State. But the tie means Minot State is locked into No. 4 with one match remaining.

Both teams had plenty of chances in the match as they combined for 36 total shots and forced their respective goalkeepers to make 17 saves. Minot State had a season high 11 corner kicks in the contest.

But the keepers were up to the challenge.

Minot State's Marie Torres (Sr., San Bruno, Calif.) finished with six saves in the game, while MSUM's Ashley Leintz finished with 11 saves.

The Beavers (12-3-2 overall, 10-3-1 NSIC) came excruciatingly close to goals three times, including two that clanged off the cross bar and once where MISU was awarded a free kick from less than 10 feet out. Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) led all players with 11 shots and seven on goal for the Beavers.

MSUM was able to tighten up its defense from earlier in the season where it allowed seven goals by Minot State in a nonconference match. On Friday, the Dragons (4-11-2, 3-9-2) blocked several shots before getting to Leintz. Erin Nyberg paced Moorhead with four shots and three on goal.

Minot State was also able to extend its unbeaten streak to six matches. The Beavers finish off the regular season with a road match at Northern State Sunday at 1 p.m.
