Second-half surge lifts Beavers

Minot State explodes for three goals in second half

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minot State University continued to be a dominate second-half team.

Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) and Jamie MacFarlane (Jr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored three minutes apart and it opened the floodgates as the Beavers cruised to a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer here Saturday.

“Zoe was good again,” said MISU head coach Jason Spain. “She is second in the nation in game-winning goals and gets another. It was a quality ball by Emilie (MISU sophomore forward Emilie Rebelo, Sacramento, Calif.). This might have been the best we have played in the Beavers short history.”

The Beavers (7-3-1 overall, 5-3-0 NSIC) have outscored opponents 10-2 in the second stanza this season and hold an 18-7 overall advantage in matches this season.

Fisher netted her eighth goal of the season in the 58th minute to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead off a feed by Rebelo. MacFarlane scored her second goal of the season 3 minutes, 8 seconds later.

Minot State pulled away from there as freshman Ryann Rafferty (D, Littleton, Colo.) headed in her first collegiate goal off a corner for Fisher in the 70th minute for a 3-0 lead.

“We get that first one and then we get three bang-bang-bang,” Spain said. “You could see the mindset we had after getting the first one. Ryann played an incredible game and it was probably the best Jamie MacFarlane has played since got here. You know, Zoe has basically half of our goals so it was nice to get two from other players.”

It was a key matchup for the Beavers as they have struggled a bit on the road, evening their away record at 2-2 with the win, and the Huskies came into the weekend just outside the top 10 in the Central Region rankings. MISU began the weekend ranked seventh.

SCSU (4-4-0, 5-5-1) got its lone goal from Haley Greving off the assist from Shannon Sorensen and Laura Moline in the 82nd minute.

Fisher was dominate in the match as she finished with a goal and an assist, four shots on goal and four shots total in 74 minutes. Marie Torres (Sr., GK, San Bruno, Calif.) finished with two saves for the win for Minot State

The Beavers move on to face Minnesota Duluth Sunday with a scheduled kickoff time of 1 p.m.
