Box Score MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University volleyball team fell flat in their home finale Thursday night in the MSU Dome as they fell to the Northern State Wolves in straight sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-22.
Northern State (15-10 overall 10-7 NSIC) used a strong attack early and often as they hit a blistering .640 in the first set. The Wolves hardly let off the brakes, as they hit an impressive .362 for the entire match.
NSU was led by their outside hitters Macey Finizio and Kaleinani Kabalis with 17 and 13 overall kills, respectively. Setter Drew Smith also played well for the Wolves, passing 41 assists.
“Northern played their game better than we played our tonight, it's that simple,” said MISU head coach
Travis Ward. “They are a team that plays consistent and challenges you with some swings. They had a good game plan. They took advantage of us in some rotations and it really hurt us.”
It was “Senior Night” at Minot State as the home crowd of 181 and the Beaver squad honored lone senior
Shari Hewson (MH, New England, N.D.). Hewson ended her home career with a performance of eight kills and nine digs.
“We've had kind of a rough year, but I have had a lot of fun at Minot State,” said Hewson. “Once you get to this age you just realize what it's all worth. I have a lot of mixed feelings.”
Minot State (6-21 overall 2-15 NSIC) was led by
Mallory Sall (Fr., OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) with 12 kills throughout the match. Setter
Emily Byrne (So., Reno, Nev.) dished out 27 assists in the loss.
“I hope that my leadership towards the younger girls helps them grow stronger as a team,” said Hewson. “I think in the future they will be a great team.”
“I have hated the injuries we have had this year, including Shari,” said Ward. “She has had her leg wrapped up all year and has never really been full strength on it. I think that is a credit to her toughness and her commitment and the person and player she is.”
MISU will hit the road for the rest of the season. Saturday Nov. 3 they play at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
