Huskies roll past Minot State

Beavers give up season-high 638 yards

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University football hasn't given up gaudy offensive numbers like it did Saturday.

The Beavers probably haven't seen a quarterback like St. Cloud State's Phillip Klaphake.

Klaphake finished accounted for 298 of the Huskies 638 total yards and five touchdowns to lead SCSU to a 57-10 win over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.

The 638 total yards was the most given up by Minot State this season.

“To be honest, I didn't see too much of their offense because I was making adjustments with our own guys,” said MISU head coach Paul Rudolph when asked about Klaphake. “But I know he is a good player. Just what I was hearing on the headsets; he was slicing and dicing us.”

Klaphake scored twice with his feet – both in the first half – and threw three touchdowns to three different receivers. When he wasn't hurting Minot State, it was the Huskies overall running game, gaining 388 yards on 43 carries. Two different running backs – Ledell White and Michael Walker – went over 100 yards rushing. White had 160 on the ground and two TDs, while Walker finished with 100 yards on 21 carries and a score.

It didn't look like a blowout was in store early as Minot State marched down the field on its first possession before the turnover bug bit again. This time it was a crucial error as Minot State's Randel Barber (Fr., RB, Maricopa, Ariz.) fumbled at the SCSU 2 and the Huskies' Mark Martin recovered the ball in the end zone to negate the drive.

“Well, it sure hurt our sideline,” Rudolph said. “We had some good energy until that fumble happened. We tried to get them back, but when St. Cloud takes it down and scores in three or four plays, it made it tough to get our sideline back.”

Walker opened the scoring for SCSU (6-4 overall, 6-4 NSIC, 4-2 NSIC North) with a 4-yard run with 7:35 remaining in the first quarter. It capped a 6-play, 80-yard drive following the fumble and set the tone for the rest of the game. From there, the Huskies put the pedal down, getting TDs from Klaphake (1 yard run), White (70 yard run), Taylor Berger (27 pass from Klaphake) and Klaphake again (11 yard scramble) to make it a 34-0 blowout at halftime.

Minot State (3-7 overall, 3-7 NSIC, 3-3 NSIC North) couldn't get anything going after the first drive until a 35-yard field goal by Aaron La Deaux (Fr., K/P, Port Orchard, Wash.) ended the shutout with 9:21 to play in the third quarter. Minot State also got a Wayne Peters (Jr., WR, Carson, Calif.) 10-yard TD reception from Zac Cunha (Fr., QB, Rocklin, Calif.) midway through the fourth quarter.

“It hurt us to get down and to become one dimensional,” Rudolph said. “They were able to pin their ears back a little bit and they got to us a few times. I think it was a combination of their coverage and their line. Anytime you get one dimensional, it's not good.”

Klaphake was 10 for 14 for 225 and three TDs passing and had 73 yards rushing on seven attempts and two scores. Treat Damon caught six passes for 75 yards and Dan Brown had two catches for 77 yards and a touchdown for SCSU.

Cunha went 22-of-34 passing for 186 yards, but was intercepted three times. He had the one TD pass. Barber gained 49 yards rushing on seven carries, while Blake Eggl (Sr., RB, Minot, N.D.) was stymied to just 25 yards on 11 carries. Peters caught five passes for 47 yards to lead the offense. MISU had a trio of players with 10 total tackles as Brett Mohr (Sr., LB, Southey, Saskatchewan), Chad Marshall (Jr., LB, Hazen, N.D.) and Levi Freidt (So., DB, Minot, N.D.) all finished with double figure tackles.

The Beavers will look to rebound in the season finale at Bemidji State University Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
