Box Score WARRENSBURG, Mo. – It was a lethal combination of a slow Minot State University start, a steady southwest wind and a tenacious offensive attack by Southwestern Oklahoma State that ended the Beavers run in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
“It really was the perfect storm,” MISU head coach
Jason Spain said. “I kind of feel I blew it with the system we played. I regret that now. We should have tried to get to the break at 0-0.”
SWOSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Paige Doherty's fourth goal of the season in the 17th minute, led 2-0 at halftime and held off a second-half charge by the Beavers to earn a 3-0 win over Minot State Friday in the NCAA Division II Central Regional at Central Missouri.
Southwestern Oklahoma (20-0-1), the fourth seed in the Central Region, moves on to face No. 1 seed Central Missouri Sunday in the second round. Minot State, the five-seed in its first ever trip to the NCAA DII tournament, ended a record-breaking season at 15-4-3.
“Bottom line is that is an undefeated season and they created problems for us that we haven't seen all year. They dribble very well and are quick,” Spain said. “That's a good team.”
After Natalie Crosslin scored in the 23rd minute of the first half, Minot State needed to find a spark. With the wind at their back, MISU created a flurry of shots and chances early in the second half, but couldn't cut into the lead.
“We were hoping to get one so they would have to think about sinking in to hold the lead. Then we could have countered with Gemma (
Gemma Biasetto, Fr., F, Albuquerque, N.M.) and Council (
Jamie Council, Jr., F, Atascadero, Calif.) and banged balls into the box,” Spain said. “But we didn't get that early one. We had some chances.”
Minot State took six corners in the second half and had nine of its 11 shots in the second half.
“I told them (at halftime) if we can come back and get this game, it would be another big title wave for us to move on,” Spain said. “I think it worked very well, we had some good chances but didn't get them to go. After a little bit, you could see us deflate a little.”
SWOSU ended any comeback chances with a counterattack goal by Samantha Nunez in the 76th minute.
Six different players figured into the three goals for Southwestern Oklahoma. Cory LaMoureaux earned the win in goal with five saves.
Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) and Council finished with three shots apiece for Minot State while Council had three shots on goal.
Marie Torres (Sr., GK, San Bruno, Calif.) finished with seven saves in her final game for Minot State.
