Box Score MINOT, N.D. – It wasn't quite a golden goal, but Minot State University's
Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) cutback tally was golden.
Fisher, whose penchant for scoring goals is evident in her fifth of the season and school-record 16th of her career, lifted the Beavers to 1-0 win over visiting Southwest Baptist University Thursday night in NCAA Division II women's soccer at Herb Parker Stadium.
It comes off the heels of a devastating 1-0 overtime loss to the University of Mary last Sunday, proving to be as important of a goal for the score as for the psyche.
“I thought she was going to get free, and she did five minutes earlier and pushed it wide, said MIS head coach
Jason Spain. “The biggest thing was she kept getting up when she was got hit. They were physical with here and she kept coming at them.”
Fisher finished with a team-high five shots, but the Beavers were getting runs late in the second half with multiple players.
“It seemed like their back line was getting looser,” Spain said. “I didn't think that with Mary, so I felt a little more confident if we went to overtime tonight than I did against Mary. I thought they were a little more spread out and a little tired. We were getting some chances.”
Minot State's defense, on the other hand, wasn't giving up much. Southwest Baptist was credited with 10 shots and seven shots on goal, but very few were high quality. Of the ones in tight, Beavers' goalkeeper
Marie Torres (Sr., San Bruno, Calif.) cleaned them up for her first shutout of the season.
“We like to sag and force shots from away and that plays into Marie's strength,” said Spain. “I don't think they had many in the box and Marie was unbelievable on the free kicks. She is in the correct spot and is so big.”
Neither team mustered much in the first half as SBU (1-2 overall) outshot Minot State 8-6. The Beavers (2-1 overall) had the best of the second-half chances with a 7-2 shots advantage.
Minot State continues its nonconference weekend with another team from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in No. 7 ranked University of Central Missouri Saturday.
“It was big for our conference,” Spain said of the win over a MIAA team. “Rob (SBU head coach Rob Podeyn) is a quality coach and they are a quality side, they are ridiculously organized. This was a good win for us. They (the MIAA) beat us (NSIC) last week and we need to beat them this week. We need to do our part and I felt like we did today.”
The match against UCM begins Saturday at noon at Herb Parker Stadium.
