Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University soccer has had trouble with giving up late, game-winning goals.
This time, the goal wasn't late.
Minnesota Duluth's Dani Potter scored on a free-kick goal just outside the box in the 52nd minute to sink the Beavers 2-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer Saturday at a blustery Herb Parker Stadium.
The goal slid just under Minot State goalkeeper
Gemma Biasetto's (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) hands on the shot low and to the far post.
"I'm not going to say that it cost us the game," said MISU head coach
Jason Spain when asked about the eventual game winner. "I am frustrated with our back line, they didn't step up and play offensive enough. They allowed them (UMD) out and left too much of a gap between our back line and midfield, that was really our main issue today."
The Beavers (2-6-2 overall, 2-5-1 NSIC) had matched the Bulldogs (8-2-0, 7-1-0) in goals in the first half with each finding the net just over two minutes apart midway through the first half, and nearly matched UMD in shots, trailing just 9-7. But the Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 10-1 in the second half with the wind at their back.
"We're getting better on offense," Spain said. "We are attacking and that is good but if our forwards are going to be effective our midfield has to have a bigger impact on the game."
Minot State's
Zoe Fisher (Jr., F, Cambridgeshire, England) netted her first goal of the season and tied the game just 2:12 after Riley Allen of UMD got her team on the board. Fisher got free behind the defense and polished off the tying goal.
But it was the last of the good offensive rushes for the Beavers as MISU failed to mount a significant rush going into a 20 mile-per-hour wind in the second half.
Biasetto and
Jimi Guibor (So., GK, Manteca, Calif.), who played the match's final 34:05, each finished with three saves for the Beavers. UMD's keeper Marissa Rosa finished with five saves in the win.
The Beavers will look to get their first home win of the season, taking on St. Cloud State Sunday at 1 p.m.
