RECENT HISTORY: Minot State split two Northern Sun matches at home this past weekend, losing 2-1 to University of Minnesota Duluth before getting back on track with a 3-1 win against St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon at Herb Parker Stadium. In the win, the Beavers outshot the Huskies 20-14 and had 12 shots on goal compared to just six by SCSU. After rattling off seven wins in a row earlier in the 2013 season, the Vikings have cooled off and lost in three of their last four matches. Last weekend, they defeated Concordia University, St. Paul 3-1 before falling in overtime to No. 4 Minnesota State 3-2. Wayne State College faced both Minnesota State and Concordia University, St. Paul, falling to both teams, extending their losing streak to five matches. The Wildcats were only able to muster one goal on the weekend while allowing nine goals to their opponents.
NOTING THE VIKINGS: Augustana College is off to one of their best starts in program history, largely due to their potent offensive attack. The Vikings rank second in every offensive statistic kept by the NSIC, including goals (30), shots (238) and assists (26). Maren Worth has been the main scoring threat for Augie in 2013, netting ten goals in 12 matches while Annie Thoresen has chipped in five goals and also dished out an assist. Goalkeeper Ashley Limmer has been efficient in the goal, allowing just 1.44 goals per match with a .739 save percentage.
NOTING THE WILDCATS: In recent years, Wayne State College soccer has struggled to climb out of the cellar of the Northern Sun. In the past seven seasons, WSC has posted a winning record just once (2010, where the team went 8-5-5. In the years after, the Wildcats have recorded fewer wins than they had the previous season. In 2013, Wayne State's offense has been stagnant as they have only recorded 62 shots on goal and just nine resulted in a goal. Macy Hagen leads the team with eight points off three goals and two assists while Kelly Voigt has six points off three goals for the Wildcats.
SERIES HISTORY: Minot State has faced both Augustana College and Wayne State College just once in the brief history of the program. Both of those matches came in 2012 where the Beavers beat both teams on the road.
LATE SEASON COMEBACK: In 2012, when Minot State made their historic run to the NSIC Tournament Championship and NCAA Division II Tournament, the season wasn't too different than it was at this point in 2013. Compared to last year, the Beavers are just three points off their pace in the standings where they were heading into the mid-October weekend. Last season, from this point forward the Beavers didn't lose until the NCAA Tournament.
A LITTLE CHANGE: Minot State changed its starting goalkeeper for the first time this season Sunday and it paid off. MISU went with sophomore transfer
Jimi Guibor (Manteca, Calif.) for her first start in a Beavers' uniform and Guibor made the most of her first start, stopping five shots and earning the win in a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State.
FISHER'S STRONG WEEKEND: After struggling offensively and playing through injuries, MISU all-time leading goal scorer
Zoe Fisher (Jr., F, Cambridgeshire, England) got back on track last weekend. Fisher scored two goals and added an assist in the two matches played at home. Fisher now has eight points on the season (two goals, four assists.)
GAME WINNING GOALS:
Kayla Schlittenhart (So., Mid, Sparks, Nev.) scored her second game winning goal of the season in the 2-1 win to Concordia University, St. Paul. Her goal came the exact same way her first goal came in a needed time in the 54th minute after the Beavers surrendered a lead to the Golden Bears. Schlittenhart now has three goals on the season and has also dished out an assist.
FLOOD GATES OPENED: For the first time of the season, Minot State scored more than two goals in a soccer match in a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State on Oct. 13. In Beaver soccer history, MISU has scored three or more goals in 13 different matches and by no coincidence Minot State has a 13-0-0 record in those matches.
CAREER FIRSTS: The 3-1 win against St. cloud State marked a special moment for two MISU players; it was their first goal as members of the Minot State soccer team.
Taylor Franco (Jr., M, Yuba City, Calif.) and
Jayden Montejano (Fr., F, Sutter, Calif.) each found the back of the net, helping rejuvenate the MISU offense on their way to victory.
