Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – It was Minot State University's turn to rally late in the fourth quarter.
A late interception return by
Brandon Boston (Jr., DB, Richmond, Texas) made a blocked extra point by
Dalton Houghton (R-Fr., LB, Lethbridge, Alberta) loom large as the Beavers rallied for a 20-19 over Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football Saturday at Ed Widseth Field.
Boston's interception and return for a score with just 2:01 remaining in the game capped a wild game in which both teams blocked a kick and neither team finished with more than 250 total yards. It also snapped Minot State's five-game losing streak.
Boston stepped in front of a Kyle Larson pass at the Minot 41 and went 59-yards for his second interception of his career and first TD in a MISU uniform.
Minot State also stymied the Golden Eagles on their next possession to stop a late-game drive as
Bryce Broome (Fr., DB, Port Orchard, Wash.) stopped Larson a yard short on a 4 th-and-6 from the UMC 34 to seal the game.
The Beavers (2-6 overall, 2-6 NSIC, 1-3 NSIC North) trailed much of the second half as UMC's Paul Webster picked up a blocked field goal attempt and returned it 85 yards for a score just before the halftime buzzer to make it 6-3 and Talo Pascal scored on the Golden Eagles first play in the second half.
But Minot State's Houghton blocked the extra point attempt after the Webster return and UMC missed the PAT after the Pascal run to leave the game at 12-3 UMC just two minutes into the second half.
The Beavers cut the lead to 12-10 as
Zac Cunha (So., QB, Rocklin, Calif.) hit
Leon La Deaux (Jr., WR, Port Orchard, Wash.) for a 22-yard TD three minutes later. LaDeaux was Cunha's favorite target on the day, catching six passes for 82 yards and the one score.
UMC (2-6 overall, 2-6 NSIC, 1-3 NSIC North), however, pushed the game back to a two-score lead with a 5-yard TD pass from Larson to Marcus Cheatham late in the third quarter.
Minot State's response was its best drive of the game, going 67 yards on 16 plays to get a 27-yard field goal from
Brian Gutierrez (Jr., K, Granada Hills, Calif.) with 9:19 to play, cutting the lead to just six. Minot State's defense held from there, allowing one first down the rest of the way coming on a penalty.
That set up Boston's late-game heroics and gave the Beavers its first road NSIC win of the season.
Defensively, Minot State was superb as they help UMC to just nine first downs, 23 yards rushing and just 164 total yards. The Golden Eagles nearly had more penalty yards (129) then it did total offense (164).
The Beavers picked off Larson twice and sacked him five times.
Matt Sumlin (So., DB, Bakersfield, Calif.) had an excellent defensive game, finishing with two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and four total tackles.
Levi Freidt (Jr., DB, Minot, N.D.) had the Beavers' other interception, while
Chad Marshall (Sr., LB, Hazen, N.D.) led the team with eight tackles and a pass breakup.
Pascal led UMC with 43 yards rushing and a TD and Larson went 16-for-26 for 141 yards and a TD. Forrest Dunivin had a solid day catching ball, finishing with nine receptions for 83 yards.
For the Beavers,
Jarvis Mustipher (R-Fr., RB, Melbourne, Fla.) picked up his second 100-plus rushing day as he finished with 126 yards on 27 carries, the most for the Beavers in both categories this season. Cunha wasn't extremely efficient as he finished with 128 yards on 13-for-31 passing, but had a touchdown and no interceptions.
Wayne Peters (Sr., WR, Carson, Calif.) finished with four catches for 21 yards.
Minot State is finally back at Herb Parker Stadium as they play host to Minnesota State-Moorhead Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
