Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minot State University gave No. 17 St. Cloud State a run for about two and a half quarters before the Huskies pulled away in the end for a 38-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win Saturday at Husky Stadium.
The loss spoiled Minot State head coach Paul Rudolph's homecoming to Husky Stadium where he served as the SCSU offensive coordinator for seven seasons. It was the Beavers first trip to St. Cloud since MISU moved to NCAA Division II.
Minot State (2-8 overall, 2-8 NSIC, 1-5 NSIC North) battled the nationally ranked Huskies for the entire first half, and appeared poised to take a lead into the halftime locker room but a key string of events gave SCSU the lead.
The Beavers tied the game at 7 midway through the first quarter with a 2-yard run by
Wayne Peters (Sr., WR, Carson, Calif.) and were driving into SCSU territory with less than two minutes to play in the first half, but the Huskies forced a fumble at the SCSU 35 that Bo Putrah recovered all the way the back at the SCSU 48.
Six plays later, Ledell White capped an efficient drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to give SCSU a 14-7 lead just in front of the halftime whistle.
The lead grew to 21-7 after Michael Walker hauled in a 17-yard TD from Phillip Klaphake five minutes into the third quarter, but the Beavers responded.
Randel Barber (So., RB, Maricopa, Calif.) scored from 16 yards out to cut the lead to 21-14 four minutes later, capping a 10-play, 75-yard drive. Barber and
Jarvis Mustipher (R-Fr., RB, Melbourne, Fla.) combined for 44 yards rushing on the drive and
Zac Cunha (So, QB, Rocklin, Calif.) hit
Porter Sturm (So., WR, Roy, Mont.) with a key 19-yard TD pass on a 3rd and 10 to push into SCSU territory.
But Minot State couldn't get closer.
SCSU (9-1, 9-1, 5-1) answered the Barber TD with a quick six play drive that featured five runs by White, including a 29-yard TD to push the game back to a two-score margin. The Huskies went on to outscore the Beavers 17-0 to pull away for the win.
Peters finished with seven receptions for 71 yards to break the Beavers all-time, single season reception mark with his 66th reception of the year breaking Hall of Famer Harry Mills' previous high of 65. He needs 13 catches in his final game next week to break the NSIC single-season record held by former MISU receiver Jabari Taylor when Taylor was a member of the MSU-Moorhead team.
Walker and White paced SCSU on the ground with 87 and 83 yards rushing respectively. They helped the Huskies to 268 yards rushing and 468 total yards, outgaining MISU 468-260. Klaphake went 15 for 26 for 200 yards and a TD.
Mustipher finished with 110 yards rushing on 23 carries for his third 100-plus rushing game of the season to lead the Beavers' ground game. Cunha was 13 for 34 for 138 yards.
Chad Marshall (Sr., LB, Hazen, N.D.) went over 300 tackles for his career with a team-high nine stops on defense.
Casey Weinmann (Jr., LB, Selz, N.D.) added eight tackles and
Josh Weidler (Sr., LB, Velva, N.D.) added seven.
Mike Hickman (Sr., DB, Havre, Mont.) picked off Klaphake for his first interception of the season.
Minot State will look to end the season on a high note and end a lengthy losing streak to fellow Beaver Bemidji State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium.
