Melton scores first goal, lifts Beavers to another tie

Minot State freshman Chloe Melton scores her first collegiate goal

Box Score BOLIVAR, Mo. – Minot State University must not feel 90 minutes of soccer is enough.

The Beavers (0-0-1 NSIC, 0-0-2 overall) played their second-straight double overtime match to start the 2013 season and settled for another tie as MISU scored the game's equalizer in the 81st minute, tying Southwest Baptist 1-1 in nonconference NCAA Division II women's soccer Thursday.

"It was a tough match. We definitely played one of the top teams in the Central Region," said MISU head coach Jason Spain. "They had already beaten U-Mary and Upper Iowa and we withstood their pressure and had great chances to win the game. We had three breakaways and missed in the second half and hit the crossbar once and the side once."

Minot State's English connection struck for the Beavers' first goal of the season. Freshman Chloe Melton (F, Fleet, England) scored her first collegiate goal on a feed from Zoe Fisher (Jr., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) right in front of the goal 80 minutes, 39 seconds into the contest. The goal was the first for the Beavers in 2013 in the 191st minute of the season.

"Chloe Melton was incredible," Spain said. "It was very nice for her to get that game-tying goal. Zoe got free twice after her goal."

Sophomore Gemma Biasetto (GK, Albuquerque, N.M.) made it stand up for the tie as she finished with seven saves on a total of 24 shots. Biasetto made all seven saves over the second half and first overtime. She has two ties and just one goal against in her first two starts.

"The defense did a great job. Taylor Carlstrom (Sr., D, Portland, Ore.) did a crazy good job of organizing our and articulating our adjustments to their midfield. Kelli Creese (R-Fr., D, LaVerne, Calif.) played physical and she was composed. I really think our depth played a major part in us taking over the second half."

Southwest Baptist (0-0-0, 2-1-1 overall) scored midway through the second half on a goal from Karla Jamison. Goalkeeper Paige Hemphill almost made it a game-winner with seven total saves, including three in the first half.

Fisher finished with four shots on goal and five total shots for the Beavers. Minot State will move on in nonconference against the MIAA with a 1 p.m. contest Saturday at No. 24 ranked Central Missouri..
