Recent History: The Beavers opened their 2013 season with a 29-0 road loss at the hands of Concordia University, St. Paul. Minot State could not win the field position battle, as the offense only gained 182 total yards and provided the Golden Bears with many short fields. Minot State was shutout for the second consecutive game dating back to 2012 as MISU was outgained in rushing yards 215-45. Augustana College opened the Jerry Olszewski era with a bang as they jumped out to a 41-7 halftime lead on their way to a 41-28 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead. Augie is now 3-1 in their last four games as they have racked up 149 points in those games.
Overall Series: Minot State and Augustana College have never met on the football field in the history of the two schools.
Noting the Vikings: Augustana College opened their 2013 season with a balanced offensive attack and a energetic defense. The Vikings gained 227 yards on the ground and 166 yards through the air on their way to a 41-28 win over MSU-Moorhead. Quarterback Trey Heid led the attack with 166 yards passing and a passing touchdown while also adding 83 rushing yards with a rushing touchdown. Running back Dajon Newell also had a rushing score while collecting 96 yards on the ground. On the other side of the ball, Redshirt Freshman transfer Brandon Mohr led Augie with 11 total tackles and defensive back Chad Curry made five tackles and also scored on a 34-yard scamper after recovering a fumble.
Home Grown: Junior
Levi Freidt (DB, Minot, N.D.) grew up watching Beaver football and even played his high school home games with Bishop Ryan High School at Herb Parker Stadium. When Freidt and the Beavers step on the field against Augie, he will be the team's leading tackler. He notched nine total tackles (5 solo, 4 assisted) in the week one loss to Concordia, St. Paul. In 2012, Freidt ranked fifth on the Beavers with 57 tackles and one interception.
At The Helm: In the 29-0 loss to Concordia University, St. Paul,
Cooper Helm (So., DB, Wenatchee, Wash.) recorded his first interception of the season. His third career interception came at a good time for Minot State as Helm picked off the ball inside his teams five yard line, preventing a score just before halftime.
California Connection: Quarterback
Zac Cunha (So., Rocklin, Calif.) and wide receiver
Wayne Peters (Sr., Carson, Calif.) share a connection both on and off the field. The two California natives worked well with each other on the football field in 2012, connecting 39 times for 531 yards and four touchdowns. That connection also carried over into the 2013 season, as the duo hooked up eight more times for 58 yards.
Linebacker Turned Punter: In 2012,
Mitchell Matthias (So., LB/P, Merritt Island High School) saw time at linebacker and recorded nine tackles in seven games. Due to injuries in the offseason, coach Paul Rudolph asked Matthias to punt the ball the Beavers in 2013. In the opener, Matthias punted for an average of 32.6 yards with one touchback.
Three And Out: Minot State was forced to punt 10 times in their season opener against Concordia University, St. Paul. That was the most times the Beavers have punted in a game since Andrew Walker punted 10 times during the 2011 season.
By the Numbers
7.7 Percent: The Minot State offense was only able to convert on third down once in thirteen (7.7%) tries in their season opening loss to Concordia University, St. Paul. Augustana College's defense, however, allowed six third down conversions in their season opening win.
104: The Vikings committed 11 penalties for 104 yards in their 41-28 win over MSU-Moorhead. The Beavers will look to work this to their advantage and draw some penalties to gain some first downs and win the field position battle.
5.5: In his first collegiate game, Minot State running back
Jarvis Mustipher (R-Fr., Melbourne, Fla.) averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Mustipher had six carries for 33 yards, and impressively had no runs that went for negative yards.
