RECORDS: Minot State enters the weekend's matchups with a record of 0-1-2 on the 2013 season. Southwest Minnesota State University has a perfect 4-0-0 record while the Cougars from University of Sioux Falls are 0-4-0.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State's head coach is
Jason Spain. Spain is in his fourth season with the Beavers and he sports a record 35-20-8. Last season, he led MISU to a NSIC Tournament Championship as well as an NCAA Division II National Tournament berth. The Mustangs are coached by T.J. Buchholz. Buchholz is in his third year with SMSU and sports a record of 16-19-2 with the Mustangs entering his match with MISU. University of Sioux Falls is coached by Mekonnen Afa. Afa is in his eighth season at the helm of the Cougar soccer program. He has collected a career record of 100-104-20 during his tenure coaching both men's and women's soccer.
RANKINGS: Minot State, Southwest Minnesota State University and University of Sioux Falls all did not receive any votes in the Sept. 17 National Soccer Coaches' Association of American Poll.
RECENT HISTORY: The Beavers traveled south to Missouri to play two matches against MIAA opponents. Minot State scored their first goal of the season in a 1-1 tie against Southwest Baptist University. The Beavers then faced their first nationally ranked opponent of the 2013 season, No. 24 Central Missouri. The Jennies defeated MISU 2-0. SMSU is off the their best start in school history, as they defeated Lindenwood University 2-1 to push their record to 4-0-0. Prior to that, the Mustangs opened up NSIC play with 3-1 win over University of Sioux Falls. The Cougars have started the 2013 campaign 0-0-4, pushing their winless streak to 22 matches. The last time USF won, was Nov. 6, 2011 when they defeated University of Winnipeg 1-0.
NOTING THE MUSTANGS: Southwest Minnesota State University has improved on both sides of the ball compared to the 2012 season. The Mustangs have given up just three goals in four matches in 2013, compared to the first four matches last season when they gave up nine goals. In 2013, SMSU has averaged two goals per match while a year ago, they managed score just two goals total in four matches. Junior Autumn Hayes leads the offensive attack for the Mustangs with three goals and two assists while Goalkeeper Brienna Dehkes has made 22 saves in 25 opportunities.
NOTING THE COUGARS: University of Sioux Falls has managed to score just one goal so far in the 2013 season. The goal came off the foot of Caitlyn Crouse against SMSU in the NSIC opener. Crouse had a team high two shots on goal that match and leads USF overall with three shots on goal this season. Goalkeeper Corrin Cook has played every minute between the pipes for the Cougars making 22 saves and allowing nine goals.
SERIES HISTORY: Minot State and Southwest Minnesota State University have faced each other three times throughout their programs history. The Beavers hold a 2-1 advantage but all three matches have been decided by one goal (two of them in overtime). Minot State and University of Sioux Falls have played each other five times since the inception of the Beaver soccer program, with MISU winning four of the five matches.
LAST MATCH IN MARSHALL: Last time the Minot State soccer program played at the Schwan Regional Event Center, the Beavers fell to the Mustangs, 2-1 in overtime. SMSU's Maggy Rouse scored in the 93rd minute, squeeking it past
Marie Torres in the MISU goal. Minot State will look to avenge their only loss to the Mustangs with a win on Saturday.
MELTON SCORES:
Chloe Melton (Fr., F, Fleet, England) scored her first collegiate goal in the 1-1 tie against Southwest Baptist. Melton's goal couldn't have come at a more needed time as MISU was down 1-0 with under ten minutes remaining. A nice feed from
Zoe Fisher (Jr., F, Cambridgeshire, England) allowed Melton to score with ease and tie the match.
BIASETTO SETTLING IN:
Gemma Biasetto (So., GK, Albuquerque, N.M.) played all of last season as a forward for the Minot State soccer team. In 2013, she has made the transition to between the pipes and has settled in nicely for the Beavers. In three matches she has made 18 saves and allowed just three goals. In her first career start, she shutout the University of Mary in a 0-0 tie at Herb Parker Stadium.
DEFENSIVE WORKHORSE: Both
Gemma Biasetto (So., GK, Albuquerque, N.M.) and
Taylor Carlstrom (Sr., D, Portland, Ore.) have played all but nine minutes for the Beavers defensive unit in 2013. For Carlstrom, a senior captain, this is nothing new as she was second on the team in minutes played in 2012 with 1,623.
SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS: In 2012, when the Beavers went 15-4-3, Minot State outshot their opponents on average of 15-12 per match. This season, that hasn't been the case as opponents have been shooting 18 times per match while MISU has only attempted 11 shots per match.
BY THE NUMBERS
9: Minot State has only been able to get nine shots off during the first half so far this season. The Beavers have allowed their opponents to shoot the ball 25 times in the first half, however those 25 shots have resulted in just one goal against MISU.
.700: Minot State's all-time scoring leader,
Zoe Fisher (Jr., Cambridgeshire, England) has attempted 10 shots during the 2013 season, seven of them have been shots on goal for a SOG percentage of .700. Last season when Fisher scored 10 goals and nine assists, she had a SOG percentage of .581.
3: Three Beaver freshman have started matches during the the 2013 season.
Jayden Montejano (Fr., F, Sutter, Calif.) has started all three matches and played a total of 260 minutes.
Chloe Melton (Fr., F, Fleet, England) has scored the only goal for MISU in 148 minutes while
Erika Linch (Fr., F, Sutter, Calif.) has started two matches and been on the field for 79 minutes.
