Beavers shutout at SMSU

Minot State gives up season-high four goals, all in second half

Box Score MARSHALL, Minn.– Minot State University gave up a season-high four goals – all in the second half – as Southwest Minnesota State ran away from the Beavers 4-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer Saturday at The Schwan Regional Event Center.

"We just have no intensity, don't seem to care about winning and really just floated around for the entire game," said MISU head coach Jason Spain. "We lacked intensity and our best players have been our worst."

The Beavers (0-2-2 overall, 0-1-1 NSIC) have scored a total of one goal on the season and have struggled to keep constant pressure – a staple in Spain's scheme – for much of the season. On Saturday, Minot State was limited to just five shots and only two shots on goal and was outshot 11-1 in the second half.

The best chance MISU had to get their first conference goal of the season was a short shot by Yuvitza Garcia (Jr., M, Sun City, Calif.) late in the second half that SMSU's Brienna Dehkes was able to handle for the save.

"It's been hanging over our heads all season," Spain said of the lack of scoring. "It really puts a lot of pressure on our back line. We didn't get a great day out of our keeps as well and had too many different combinations late in the game."

The Mustangs (5-0-0, 2-0-2) got two goals from Miranda Cadena, including the eventual game-winner early in the second half. She scored just over a minute into the second half, breaking a 0-0 tie and propelling SMSU. Morgan Weyer-Coates and Megan Haniger also scored for SMSU.

Kelli Crease (R-Fr., D, La Verne, Calif.) finished with two shots and a shot on goal for Minot State.

The Beavers move on in conference play to face the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D., Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.

"We will regroup tomorrow," Spain said.
