Beavers get first NSIC win

Minot State takes first lead of the season on a Kayla Schlittenhart header

Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minot State University soccer finally got the scoring monkey off its back.

The Beavers' Kayla Schlittenhart (So., Mid, Sparks, Nev.) headed in a corner from Zoe Fisher (Jr., F, Cambridgeshire, England) in the 69 th minute to give Minot State its first lead of the 2013 season and propelled MISU to a 2-1 win over the University of Sioux Falls in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer Sunday at the USF Sports Complex.

"It was certainly a good feeling for us," said MISU head coach Jason Spain. "We really competed today and that is something we have lacked this year."

The Beavers (1-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 NSIC) were deflated in a 4-0 loss Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State, but got an emotional lift from a speech from one of its players.

"We got a lift from an unexpected source," Spain said. "Breanne Hatfield (So., D, Manteca, Calif.) told them 'We're not losing this game' and it got through. There was a lot more fire from the group. That is a little out of character for Breanne and it was what we needed."

The Beavers extended the lead to 2-0 as freshman Chloe Melton (F, Fleet, England) redirected a feed from Emilie Rebelo (So., CM, Sacramento, Calif.) seven minutes after the Schlittenhart goal. Minot State scored both goals into a stiff wind after going scoreless in the first half.

"We were all over them early on with the win, but we couldn't get a goal. You start to think if it's ever going to happen and it continued to get more and more frustrating," Spain said. "But we got the two into the wind and we hope this is sign of good things to come on offense. We attacked much better and were more aggressive today."

The Cougars (0-6-0, 0-3-0) got a late goal from Maria Gonzalez to cut the lead in half, but couldn't get the equalizer. Minot State outshot USF 15-12 and finished with a 6-0 lead in corner kicks, taking five in the first half.

Gemma Biasetto (So., GK, Albuquerque, N.M.) earned her first win of her career in goal, making four saves for the Beavers. Corrin Cook suffered the loss for USF.

Minot State celebrates Homecoming 2013 with games on Friday and Sunday. MSU plays host to Winona State Friday at 7 p.m. and Upper Iowa Sunday at 1 p.m. with both games at Herb Parker Stadium.
