Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University dropped a pair of tough matches on the weekend, allowing late goals in each.
On Sunday, it was an overtime game-winner for Upper Iowa University.
The Peacocks' Maggie Olson turned from 25-yards out and drilled a shot just under the cross bar in the 98th minute as UIU defeated Minot State 1-0 in overtime in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer at Herb Parker Stadium.
"I thought we played the best we played all year," said MISU head coach Jason. "I'm not mad at all about this loss or mad at the team, Upper Iowa is a good team who has beaten solid opponents. There is no reason to hang our head."
"It was an error on my part. I should have used an open hand and just tip it away," said MISU goalkeeper
Gemma Biasetto (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) "That won't happen again. I feel we are still a good team and are getting it on the right track. We will be competitive come tournament time."
The Beavers (1-4-2 overall, 1-3-1 NSIC) had two big chances in the overtime to get a late goal of their own, but neither
Emilie Rebelo (So., CM, Sacramento, Calif.) nor
Jayden Montejano (Fr., CM, Sutter, Calif.) could get enough on shots early in the extra session.
"Without Zoe (injured forward
Zoe Fisher, Jr., F, Cambridgeshire, England), we have five freshmen up front. I thought they played fairly well overall up front," Spain said. "
Kelli Creese (R-Fr., D, La Verne, Calif.) did a really good job of marking their best forward (Aimee) Wronski."
The Olson goal was one of the few decent chances either team allowed all match. The Beavers had 16 shots, but just eight on goal and Upper Iowa managed just 15 shots with eight coming on goal. The Peacocks also hit a cross bar in the 60th minute, providing the best scoring chance for either team in regulation.
Wronksi finished with six shots, including three on goal, but did not register a point. For the Beavers, Rebelo mustered six shots with two on goal and
Chloe Melton (Fr., F, Fleet, England) added three shots on goal.
Biasetto finished with seven saves in the loss for the Beavers, while Kaitlyn Emanuel finished with eight saves for Upper Iowa.
