MINOT, N.D. – Entering the weekend as the No. 8 team in the NSIC, the Minot State University women's soccer team needed points to keep their postseason hopes alive. Friday night against Minnesota-Duluth, they took care of business coming away with a 3-1.
"Our team was very disciplined," head coach
Jason Spain said. "Haley [Lolmaugh] shut down [Maureen] Stormont. Her goal was off a free kick."
Emilie Rebelo (Jr., D, Sacramento, Calif.) got the scoring started in the 17th minute when she found the back of the net off a free kick from 20 yards out.
The Beavers held a 1-0 advantage until the 41st minute when the Bulldogs struck back. Maureen Stormont scored a free kick of her own from about 25 yards out and leveled the score at 1-1. The goal was her 11th of the season.
It looked as if the game would head to halftime all square, but Rebelo did what she does best once again. This time, the junior defender sent in a free kick from 45 yards out and sailed it over the goalkeeper's head just nine seconds before halftime.
"Rebelo was big time today," Spain said. "Two great goals from her."
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) added on an insurance goal in the 77th minute, securing the victory for the Beavers. It was MacFarlane's first goal since she scored a game winner against Southern Nazarene in the second game of the season.
Celene Johnson (Jr., GK, Rocklin, Calif.) made 11 saves for the Beavers between the posts to secure the win.
The Beavers came away with the convincing victory despite being outshot 32-11.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 6-5-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs fall to 5-8 and 5-5 in the NSIC.
With a day off on Saturday, the Beavers will rest up and prepare for another important match on Sunday against St. Cloud State. The game is set for 1 p.m.
