Beavers come home with six points

MacFarlane scores her second goal of the weekend in overtime victory

MINOT, N.D. – Six huge points. After finishing their weekend 2-0 with a 2-1 overtime victory over St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon, that's how many points the Minot State University women's soccer team is coming home with.

The Beavers began the weekend sitting in 8th place, good for the final spot in the NSIC postseason tournament and after a big win Friday at Minnesota-Duluth the Beavers gained the maximum amount of points they could this weekend with their win Sunday against SCSU.

Gemma Biasetto (Jr., F, Albuquerque, N.M.) got the Beavers off to a good start early when she put one past the keeper in just the 9th minute of play. Emilie Rebelo (Jr., D, Sacramento, Calif.) assisted on the play.

The Beavers took the game to half with a 1-0 lead.

Just over 10 minutes into play in the second half, the Huskies tied the game up with a goal from Faith Bila. Bila put a free kick from 20 yards out past the Beavers' Celene Johnson (Jr., GK, Rocklin, Calif.).

While the Beavers outshot the Huskies 16-11, they were unable to retake the lead before the referee whistled for full-time. The teams headed to extra-time.

With just under a minute left in the first period of extra-time, Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored her second goal of the weekend and sent the Beavers home with a 2-0 record on the weekend. Biasetto and Chloe Melton (So., F, Fleet, England) were credited with assists on the goal.

"It was a great passage of play," head coach Jason Spain said.

Spain was also quick to credit his back four for their performance.

"The girls played hard—we leaned on our back line for the win today," he said. "They were great. Breanne Hatfield was amazing."

With the win, the Beavers improve to 6-4-1 in the NSIC and 7-5-2 overall. Minot State is in a three-way tie for fifth place in the league. The Huskies fall to 3-8 in the conference and 4-10 overall.

The Beavers will be tested next weekend when they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the No. 20 ranked Augustana Vikings.
