Beavers tripped up by Vikings

Augustana takes three points from Minot State in battle of top five teams

MINOT, N.D. – In a game featuring two top-five teams in the Northern Sun, Augustana came out on top with a 2-1 win over Minot State Saturday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Beavers started the game with a spark and carried play early on leading to a goal in the 9th minute of play from Kristin Long (Jr., M, Mesa, Ariz.). Long struck the ball from 30 yards out and sent it over the Augustana keeper's head giving Minot State an early 1-0 advantage. Jayden Montejano (So., M, Sutter, Calif.) assisted on the play.

The Beavers continued to press early on in the half, but the Vikings goalkeeper, Ashley Limmer, made three saves in the half, including two saves that stopped shots seemingly headed for the back of the net.

The Vikings picked up a goal of their own to level the score before halftime. Samantha Arnold received a pass from Stephanie Stevens in the middle of the penalty area and finished past the Beavers' Celene Johnson (Jr., GK, Rocklin, Calif.) in the 32nd minute.

After 20 minutes of play passed in the second half, Augustana took the lead as Arnold found the back of the net again for her second goal of the afternoon.

Just one minute after the Vikings' goal, Minot State came right back and thought they scored the equalizer, but a controversial call disallowed the Beavers' potential second goal of the match.

Minot State recorded four more shots after the Vikings took the lead in the 66th minute, but the referee blew for fulltime before the Beavers could find an equalizer.

Both Emilie Rebelo (Jr., D, Sacramento, Calif.) and Long ended the match with two shots on goal for the Beavers. Jamie Ayala (Jr., F, Temecula, Calif.) and Sydnee Canales (Fr., F, Manteca, Calif.) each recorded a shot on goal coming off the bench.

The loss drops the Beavers to 7th in the NSIC and moves their conference record to 6-5-1, while their overall record is now 7-6-2. Augustana improves to 10-2 in the Northern Sun and 12-3 overall.

The Beavers will look to pick up an important three points tomorrow when they finish up their weekend at Wayne State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
