No. 2 Bulldogs prove to be too much

Sall records 13 kills as Minnesota-Duluth drops the Beavers

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University volleyball team recorded a quick three set victory yesterday when they defeated St. Cloud State and they hoped to carry their momentum into their match against the No. 2 ranked Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers did just that as they went neck and neck with Bulldogs holding a 20-19 lead late in the first set, but Minnesota-Duluth pulled away, winning six of the next seven points to steal the first set 25-21. The Bulldogs went on to sweep the Beavers in three sets.

"It was a good weekend," Beavers' head coach Travis Ward said. "I am proud of how we are playing. It was fun to push the No. 2 team in the country in set one. I am excited to see how we grow in the next week preparing fo the upcoming matches."

Mallory Sall (Jr., OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) recorded six kills in the first set for the Beavers.

As the match progressed, the Bulldogs showed why they're ranked No. 2 in the country. The Bulldogs got out to an early 5-2 lead in the second set and steadily increased their lead to 18-10 as the set went on. Minot State conceded the second set 25-18.

The Beavers ran out of gas in the final set of the match and quickly went down 9-4. The Bulldogs finished off the match taking the third set by a score of 25-12.

Sall finished the match with 13 kills, the most among either team. Rachel Fagerburg (Fr., OH, Tempe, Ariz.) finished the match with five kills for the Beavers, while Shaunessy Dauwalder (So., OH, Stanley, N.D.) recorded four kills and a team-high .375 hitting percentage.

Minnesota-Duluth displayed a balanced attack, with three hitters recording more than eight kills in the match.

The Beavers fall to 5-16 and 3-10 in the Northern Sun. Minnesota-Duluth remains undefeated in the NSIC with a 13-0 record and a 20-1 overall record.

Minot State will take a short break from NSIC action this Tuesday when they welcome former DAC rival Dickinson State to the Minot State Dome for a match at 7 p.m.
