Late goal drops Beavers

Minot State's defense breaks in the final two minutes

MINOT, N.D. – In a game with third place implications in the NSIC on the table, the Minot State University Beavers were unable to come out with a victory against the Winona State University Warriors as they dropped the match Friday night 1-0.

Despite giving up eight shots in the first half of play, the Beavers' Celene Johnson (Jr., GK, Rocklin, Calif.) was up to the test and enabled Minot State to get to halftime with the score all square.

The Warriors' pressure didn't let up in the second half, though, as they recorded 13 more shots in the second half and ultimately broke the Beavers' defense late in the second half.

Winona's Shauna Rodman found the back of the net in the 89th minute to propel the Warriors to victory.

Even being outshot 21-11 in the contest, Minot State had their share of opportunities to take the game. Chloe Melton (So., F, Fleet, England) placed all three of her shots on frame coming off the bench for the Beavers while Maritssa Perez (Fr., M, Santa Ana, Calif.) and Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) both had two shots apiece.

Johnson ended the match with 10 saves while her counterpart recorded eight.

Gemma Biasetto (Jr., F, Albuquerque, N.M.) and Dalia Tapia (So., M, Perris, Calif.) were unavailable for tonight's game.

Head coach Jason Spain was proud of his team's effort.

"We played a heck of a game," Spain said. "We hit the cross bar twice and battled the whole game. We were very unlucky to not win that game."

With the loss the Beavers fall to 4-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the NSIC. The Warriors improve to 8-1-0 and 5-1-0 in the NSIC.

Minot State will look to split on the weekend when they travel to Upper Iowa and take on the Peacocks at 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
